How to Get Your ID & Documents After Prison in WV

Start with your release packet

Before you leave, ask your reentry counselor, facility records office, or supervising officer what documents you can receive. Keep originals in a safe place and take photos or scans when possible.

• Release paperwork, discharge papers, or proof of supervision status.
• Any state ID, driver license, Social Security card, birth certificate, or prison identification card you were given.
• Your Social Security number and the name listed on your birth record.
• Proof of a West Virginia address, such as a lease, shelter letter, utility bill, or other document the agency accepts.
• A small folder, envelope, or cloud backup for every receipt and confirmation number.

Get a West Virginia ID or REAL ID

The WV DMV REAL ID information explains current requirements for a compliant license or identification card. A regular WV ID may be enough for many everyday needs; ask the DMV which credential fits your situation.

1. Gather proof of identity, your Social Security number, and two proofs of West Virginia residency from the DMV's accepted-document list.

Order a West Virginia birth certificate

The WV Vital Registration Office is the state's official source for certified birth records. Use its current certificate-request instructions for online, mail, or in-person options, fees, identification rules, and processing times.

If the record is not found, ask whether the name, county, date, or parent information was entered differently. A reentry case manager, county clerk, or legal-services provider may help you figure out the next records request.

Check voter registration and eligibility

1. Read the current eligibility guidance instead of relying on an old release handout.
2. Register online through the official WV online voter registration portal, or contact your county clerk.
3. Check your record after submitting. If anything is unclear, ask the county clerk what documentation is needed.

When a record is missing or names do not match

Do not start over alone. Ask the reentry program, probation or parole contact, county clerk, or the issuing agency which substitute documents they accept. Keep a written log with the date, person you spoke with, documents requested, fee, and next step.

• Ask whether a certified copy, agency record, or release document can prove identity temporarily.
• Ask whether a legal name change or correction is needed before another agency can issue a document.
• Ask for a receipt or written explanation if an application is denied or delayed.
